Editorial policy

This page sets out the rules our editors work under. They exist so you can judge exactly how much trust to place in any article on this site.

Independence

  • Recommendations are decided by the testing editor alone. Nobody in the commercial side of the site sees a verdict before publication.
  • Brands cannot buy inclusion in a guide, a better position, a "best" award or the removal of criticism. Any request to do so is declined and logged.
  • Affiliate commissions vary between retailers but never between products' verdicts. If a product has no affiliate program, it can still be recommended.

Sourcing and evidence

  • Every claim in a review comes from our own testing unless clearly attributed otherwise. Manufacturer figures we could not verify are labelled as such.
  • Articles name their author, and reviews name who installed and tested the product.
  • Prices, availability and retailer links are checked at publication and re-checked when articles are updated. Prices shown are "typical" prices, not live quotes.

Corrections and updates

When we get something wrong, we fix the article and note the change. Substantive corrections are dated at the foot of the article. Reviews are re-tested and re-scored when a product changes materially — a firmware update, a new model year, a change in availability — and the "last tested" note is updated to reflect that.

Advertising and sponsorship

We do not publish advertorials, sponsored posts or paid placements. The site is funded by affiliate commissions — when you buy through some of our links, the retailer pays us a small percentage at no extra cost to you. This is disclosed at the top of every article with retailer links; the full detail is in our affiliate disclosure.

If you believe we have breached this policy, please tell us and we will investigate.
